Cranford is a Union County community of about 23,000 inhabitants. It was incorporated in 1871. The overall population has remained fairly stable for over 70 years. In the 1980s, the downtown was developed into a destination with a distinctly Victorian feel. Special light fixtures and cobblestone sidewalks were added. A large Victorian street clock and a pocket park was installed in the heart of the downtown area. Decorative planters and period benches further added to the historic feel of the renovated downtown area. In the mid-eighteenth century, John Crane built two grist mills in the area. Ultimately, the mills supplied much of the grain needed by George Washington's Continental Army as battle after battle was fought in the area during the Revolutionary War. A river crossing called Crane's Ford became the inspiration for the truncated version of the phrase, and the name "Cranford" came to be. Today, Cranford real estate is located on very historic lands.
Nomahegan Park is a local park only about a ten minute walk from downtown Cranford. A two-mile trail runs around the perimeter of the park on which one can run, hike, rollerblade, or simply stroll and greet others. Twice a year, the park hosts craft fairs.
Cranford residents always enjoy a wide selection of things to do in the area. Championship golf courses, wineries, historic battle sites, state parks, lighthouses, and the Jersey Shore are all a short drive away.
