Fanwood, NJ - Homes for Sale and Community Information

Home in Fanwood NJIt has been said that good things come in small packages, and the borough of Fanwood proves this. Fanwood, NJ, only 1.3 square miles, is a predominately single-family residential community located just 20 miles southwest of New York City.  The borough offers families train and bus transportation and highway access to metropolitan hubs while providing a homey, quiet place to live.

Old, full-grown trees line Fanwood's streets. Neighborhoods with colonials, capes and splits are well-maintained and reflect the pride of their owners. Affordably priced, the borough offers homes ranging from $300,000 to $900,000. The Victorian railroad station appropriately sits in the center of town and symbolizes the rich history of this Union County borough. More than 17 Fanwood homes mark historical landmarks and add to the beauty of this community.

The Fanwood Park Historic District offers renovated Victorian residences to those looking at homes for sale in Fanwood. The District is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. It is a prime example of a late 19th century Victorian railroad community. Fanwood real estate in the area certainly evokes a sense of the history of Fanwood the way it was over a century ago.

Fanwood shares a school system with neighboring Scotch Plains, and maintains its own post office, police and fire departments, a library, and an eclectic variety of small shops which line the quaint town center. Fanwood's historical heritage, great schools, diverse home styles, convenient commuting facilities, and hometown closeness make it a wonderful place to live and raise a family!

New Jersey Monthly recently named Fanwood one of its top 100 towns in the state. Read the story here.

Fanwood, as well as all of Union County, was a part of the so-called "Elizabethtown tract," 500,000 acres that the British acquired from the Indians in 1664. The origins of the community's name are rather unique. In the late 19th century, an intrepid female journalist avidly wrote about the beauty of the area for various New York periodicals. Her name was Fanny Wood.

When the train station was built in 1874, John Taylor Johnson, the president of the Central Railroad of New Jersey, chose the name "Fanwood" for the new station. He credited Miss Wood with actually attracting both investors and visitors to the area through her articles. This historic station is one of Union County's oldest, and many locals commute to Manhattan every day for work. It is also the home of the Fanwood Museum.

LaGrandePark Fanwood NJParks and Recreation

LaGrande Park is a Fanwood Park that offers  playground equipment as well as the borough's only municipal tennis courts. The scenic, wooded park offers shaded spots in which to picnic and to relax. The Fanwood Free Summer Movie Series occurs on Tuesday nights from June through August. The series features family-friendly movies shown on a big 16-foot screen at La Grande Park where local families bring blankets and chairs to watch movies under the stars.

Golfers in search of top-rated, historic courses need only venture as far as Shackamaxon Country Club in Scotch Plains. "The Shack," an Indian term for "meeting place of the chiefs," was designed in the 1920s and has hosted the New Jersey State Open five times.  The nearby Plainfield Country Club features a manicured layout measuring 6,865 yards from the longest tees. The course has been repeatedly ranked as one of the better courses in America by Golf Digest
